Insulet has become the only Central Massachusetts public company to be led by a woman as the Acton-based medical device manufacturer has tapped former Johnson & Johnson executive and Fortune-recognized leader Ashley McEvoy as its new president and CEO, effective immediately.

McEvoy comes to Insulet having worked at the New Jersey-based healthcare company Johnson & Johnson from 1996 to 2023, ending her nearly 30-year tenure in 2023 as executive vice president and worldwide chairman of the company’s MedTech business, which has 60,000 global employees and more than $30 billion in revenue, according to a Monday press release from Insulet.

McEvoy has earned international recognition for her business leadership, including being named one of Fortune magazine’s Future Fortune 500 CEOs in 2023 and one of the magazine’s Most Powerful Women in 2019.

“In Ashley, we found not only a world-class leader with nearly three decades of healthcare leadership experience, but a visionary with unique insight into operating at the intersection of medtech and consumer health,” Timothy Scannell, chairman of Insulet’s board of directors, said in the release. “Under Ashley’s leadership, Insulet will achieve even greater success, strengthen growth and innovation, and deliver superior returns for investors.”

McEvoy succeeds Jim Hollingshead, who has led the manufacturer since June 2022. Hollingshead replaced Shacey Petrovic, who stepped down for personal reasons, leaving Central Massachusetts with no female-led public companies.

Central Massachusetts is home to the headquarters of 24 companies publicly traded on New York Stock Exchange or Nasdaq, including the likes of BJ's Wholesale Club in Marlborough, The TJX Cos. in Framingham, and Harvard Bioscience in Holliston. With the exception of Insulet, all 24 companies are led by male CEOs.

Hollingshead stepped down from his position after mutually agreeing with the company’s board of directors that now is the right time to transition leadership, according to the release. He will remain with Insulet in a consulting capacity to ensure a smooth transition.

“Having stepped into the CEO role from the board of directors, Jim has led Insulet through a very strong period of growth and development. During Jim’s tenure, Insulet launched its flagship product, Omnipod 5, which has achieved clear market leadership in type 1 diabetes in the U.S. and Europe, and was the first to market in automated insulin delivery for type 2 diabetes in the U.S. As Jim hands over the reins, Insulet is the clear global leader in our market, and poised to grow and scale even further. We’re grateful for his contributions, and we wish him the best in his future endeavors,” Scannell said in the release.

Since leaving Johnson & Johnson, McEvoy has served on the board of directors of Procter & Gamble, an Ohio-based cleaning product manufacturer, working on its Compensation & Leadership Development and Innovation & Technology committees.

McEvoy earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania, according to her LinkedIn profile.

“Insulet has transformed diabetes care, and I am honored to join the company as its next CEO,” McEvoy said in the release. “At this critical moment in the Company and market’s evolution, Insulet has a unique opportunity to enhance innovation, drive global expansion, and win the hearts and minds of more providers and consumers by thinking differently about the experiences and needs of people with diabetes. I am excited to work alongside Insulet’s accomplished team to do just that – and in the process, continue to revolutionize diabetes care and make life easier for people living with diabetes, while driving value creation for shareholders.”
