Sobering News
The state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission ruled recently that any brewery in Massachusetts holding a farmer-brewer license — which many of the breweries in Central Massachusetts do — must grow or buy at least 50 percent of the ingredients for its beer in Massachusetts. The ruling was met with cries of outrage from local brewers and the debate spilled onto WBJournal.com. Below are two comments from online readers on the issue:
"It is apparent that the commonwealth needs a third category: craft brewer — this class would be smaller than the manufacturer, but larger than the farmer-brewer and would need to encompass the sale at the location and perhaps have a fee that is somewhere between the two."

"This ruling is arbitrary and uneducated. If allowed to stay as is, say goodbye to craft beers in Mass."

Commuting Patterns
The Aug. 1, 2011 issue of the Worcester Business Journal included a Page One story on commuting patterns in Central Massachusetts as well as profiles of four local commuters. The package inspired this comment from a reader who drives from Auburn to Cambridge each day:
"The money value of my time makes commuting by car an obvious choice. Yes, the cost of public transportation is nominally less, but I've determined the math to the point that I'd commute by car even if gas prices go to $5 per gallon."
