The Middlesex West Chamber of Commerce of Acton is holding its Annual Summer Bash After-Hours from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28, at NARA Park at 25 Ledge Rock Way, which is off Route 27, in Acton.
It will also be an appreciation night for businesses sponsoring the chamber's Oktoberfest 5K Run/Walk in West Acton on Oct. 3. The road race is held in conjunction with the West Acton Merchants Oktoberfest.
The after-hours event is considered a kick-off event for the race itself, according to Sarah Fletcher, executive director of the chamber. Five dollars of each $15 race registration fee can be designated to one of 28 local nonprofits that have teamed up with the chamber as affiliates for the race. A nonprofit can fill out a simple form with the chamber to become an affiliate.
The other $10 of the registration fee goes to the Sarah Lynn Hughes Memorial Scholarship, which is also local.
"We think we have a cool business model for the race that creates an avenue for nonprofits to raise money as we raise scholarship money," Fletcher said.
At the NARA Park event, all of the 28 nonprofits can set up booths to promote their group and sign up race registrants to get a start on fund raising, Fletcher said.
Last year, more than $3,000 went back to local nonprofits such as scouting organizations, parent teacher organizations and the Boys & Girls Club among others.
The after-hours event will feature live music from the Acton Jazz Café, a beer and wine-tasting party courtesy of Colonial Spirits, raffle prizes and a BBQ. The event is free.
The Acton Recreation Department will be hosting the event.
Although the event is free, registration is requested. Registration can be completed at www.mwcoc.com or call the chamber at 978-263-0010.
