Saint Vincent Hospital's management and nurses have reached a tentative agreement averting a one-day strike that had been planned for Friday at the Worcester hospital.
The nurses' union, the Massachusetts Nurses Association, says the three-year contract includes RN-to-patient ratios that ensure nurses on medical-surgical floors and telemetry floors, where heart patients are monitored, cannot be assigned more than four or five patients at a time.
The contract takes effect retroactively, running from Jan. 1, 2010 to Dec. 31, 2012.
According to the union, other elements of the contract include the addition of "resource nurses" to help care for patients on medical-surgical and telemetry floors and wage increases of 1 percent effective at the start of 2011 and another 1 percent a year later, as well as a new 2-percent step at the top of the salary scale.
