Worcester's Siemens VAI has landed a contract to supply a wire rod mill to a new plant being built by Chinese steelmaker Xuanhua Iron & Steel Group Co.
The new plant will allow Xuanhua to enter markets for higher-quality steel products. Siemens is expected to deliver the double strand wire rod mill during the first quarter of 2011.
The new mill will be able to produce a wide variety of steel products. Depending on the product mix, Siemens estimates that each strand of the new mill will produce between 500,000 and 600,000 tons of steel per year.
Xuanhua is a subsidiary of the Hebei Iron & Steel Group. This is the second project Siemens has done for a Hebei subsidiary in recent months.
The value of the Xuanhua contract was not disclosed.
