New Hampshire-based utility Unitil Corp., which supplies electricity to several North Worcester County towns, lost $2.1 million in the second quarter.
During the same period a year earlier, the company made a $200,000 profit.
Unitil said the loss was the result of higher depreciation and interest payments, as well as lower gas sales margins during the summer months.
For the first half of the year, the company reported a profit of $4.4 million compared to $9.3 million a year prior.
Gas sales declined 5.1 percent during the quarter while electricity sales increased 5.3 percent.
