Season of Giving

Almost half of workers polled by the administrative staffing company OfficeTeam plan to give a present to a coworker this holiday season, and 34 percent are shopping for their boss.

But the survey of 455 office employees also found that only 36 percent expect to get a gift from a colleague and 29 percent from a manager.

A majority of women, 58 percent, plan to buy for a coworker, compared with 37 percent of men. Younger workers were also more likely to be in gifting mode, with 62 percent of 18- to 34-year-olds saying they plan to buy something for a colleague. The 45 to 54 age bracket appears to be the least generous, with just 37 percent saying they expect to give something to a coworker.

OfficeTeam says workers should follow their own company's corporate culture when deciding whether to buy gifts. New employees can get hints from their more experienced coworkers.

In general, the firm says, office workers shouldn't feel obligated to exchange presents, and should consider inexpensive, perhaps homemade, gifts if they do want to offer a present.

If given an unexpected gift, there's no need to scramble to reciprocate, OfficeTeam says. Instead, write a nice thank-you note to let the giver know the present was appreciated.
