Sears in Natick Mall only Mass. store to close in bankruptcy

The Sears store in the Natick Mall is the only of the troubled retail giant’s stores to close in Massachusetts after it filed for bankruptcy Monday. 

The store, located on the first floor of the mall, has already downsized from its longtime two-story home at the east end of the Natick shopping destination. The second floor is becoming a Dave & Buster’s entertainment location.

Sears said Monday it will close the Natick location and 142 other unprofitable stores “near the end of the year.”

That leaves nine others Sears, Sears Auto Center and KMart locations open in Central Massachusetts, including Sears locations in Auburn, Leominster and Marlborough and KMart sores in Webster and Acton.

Sears Holdings has the following Central Massachusetts stores:

— Sears Auto Center, 387 Southbridge St., Auburn 

— Sears Auto Center, 100 Commercial Rd, Leominster

— Sears, 100 Commercial Rd, Leominster

— Sears Auto Center, 521 Donald Lynch Blvd, Marlborough 

— Sears, 521 Donald Lynch Blvd., Marlborough

— Sears Appliance Outlet Store, 1000 Boston Tpke., Shrewsbury 

— Kmart, 70 Worcester Road, Webster

In its filings, the company listed assets of just under $7 billion and debts of $11.3 billion as of Aug. 4.

Simultaneous to the company’s bankruptcy filing was the resignation of CEO Edward Lampert. He will remain chairman of the board.
