Southborough-based Protonex Technology Corp. has formed a partnership with UltraCell Corp. to develop and market fuel cells to the United States military.
Under terms of the agreement, the companies will collaborate on developing existing military hardware, developing a common fuel for use in fuel cells and the sale and marketing of those products.
Protonex said it and California-based UltraCell use the same methanol/water fuel mixture in their portable power systems and intend to develop a “truly universal” fuel.
The partnership comes after the U.S. Army awarded Protonex $345,000 to work on portable power sources for soldiers. That work includes making the Protonex system compatible with the UltraCell system.
