Columbus Day weekend attendance at Old Sturbridge Village increased by 39 percent over the same weekend last year, the living museum said.
Between last Saturday and Monday, 7,655 people visited OSV compared to 5,318 last year. The majority of attendees were from New England and the museum said high gas prices and a sour economy were keeping people close to home on weekends.
James Donohue, OSV's president and CEO, said visitors worried about the economy may be reassured to see "how people survived in earlier hard times." The living museum depicts and demonstrates what rural life was like in New England in the 1830s.
The high Columbus Day weekend attendance was the latest in a run of successful holidays at OSV. The museum said more than 6,000 people visited on July 4 and that museum membership has increased by 4 percent since January.
