Natick Firm Wins $1M For Product Development

Natick-based Infinium, Inc., a metals production technology company, said it has received a $1 million U.S. Department of Energy Grant, plus a $100,000 matching grant from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) to accelerate development and commercialization of its new aluminum production technology.

Launched in 2008, the company said in a statement the funding comes just as it’s made a breakthrough in aluminum production using its patented Pure Oxygen Anode technology, which it said represents “dramatic advantages” over century-old aluminum production technology. Infinium said its method eliminates corrosive and toxic gas contamination and saves energy while reducing emissions.

This aligns with the Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) objective to find cost-effective, energy-efficient manufacturing techniques to process and recycle metals domestically, ARPA-E Deputy Director Cheryl Martin said in a statement.

Infinium was selected as a winner in the aluminum category.

“We’re excited to see how our new awardees working on innovative metals processing and recycling technologies could create a breakthrough for lightweight vehicles and energy applications,” Martin said.
