First Wind, a Boston-based renewable energy company, announced Monday that it’s begun solar projects in Millbury and Warren that will generate power for the University of Massachusetts Lowell and UMass Medical School in Worcester.
According to a statement, First Wind is installing a 3-megawatt solar energy project in Millbury, and 14 megawatts in Warren. The company said the projects, its first solar installations in Massachusetts, will comprise the second-largest solar project in Massachusetts, saving UMass more than $1 million a year in energy costs over a 30-year power purchase agreement between First Wind and UMass.
The agreement is part of a larger UMass initiative to reduce energy costs as well as its carbon footprint.
In exchange for permission to construct the systems, First Wind said it will make annual tax payments to both towns, totaling $130,000 for Warren and $50,000 for Millbury.
The towns of Orange and Millbury have also agreed to purchase smaller portions of energy generated by the systems. First Wind said Millbury will see an annual savings of $110,000.
“Massachusetts has led the way on renewable energy issues, and we are excited that we are able to add some clean energy projects right here in the commonwealth, which will further enhance our growing portfolio of projects and customers in the Northeast,” First Wind CEO Paul Gaynor said in a statement.
