Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray met this morning in Marlborough with the Massachusetts Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives to promote November as Hire A Veteran Month.
The chamber executives group is one of at least eight trade and commerce associations partnering with Gov. Deval Patrick's administration to encourage the hiring of military veterans.
The unemployment rate for returning male veterans ages 18 to 24 is 26.9 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That rate is well above the averages for both older veterans and for Americans in general.
Patrick plans to propose $500,000 in his fiscal year 2013 budget for the Massachusetts Manufacturing Extension Partnership to train and employ veterans. The MMEP already has $200,000 in state funding available for that purpose.
Correction: The original version of this article incorrectly characterized how many meetings with business associations the Patrick administration has scheduled to promote Hire A Veteran Month. There are approximately eight groups signing on as partners, but the administration may not formally meet with every one, according to a Murray spokeswoman. The young veteran unemployment rate has also been updated.
