Nonfarm employers added 80,000 jobs in October, led by gains in the private sector, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The national unemployment rate remained mostly unchanged at 9 percent, with 13.9 million Americans unemployed.
The private sector added 104,000 jobs, led by professional and business services, leisure and hospitality, health care and mining. Those gains were partially offset by a loss of 24,000 government jobs. The state and local government sectors have been declining since mid-2008.
The BLS also announced that 102,000 more jobs were created in September and August than previously reported. Job figures for September were revised from 103,000 to 158,000 and August was revised from 57,000 to 104,000. With this morning's jobs report, employment has increased by an average of 125,000 jobs per month over the past year.
