The 2016 Tax Amnesty Program for Massachusetts residents and businesses waiving fines and penalties for past-due taxes ends today.
The Massachusetts Department of Revenue (DOR) has been encouraging residents and businesses to take advantage of the program. A similar program was offered in 2002 and there are no plans to offer another opportunity to pay unpaid taxes and past due returns while avoiding penalties any time soon, according to a release from the DOR.
In addition to taking advantage of being able to pay while avoiding additional fines, the DOR warned that a new computer system will allow the organization to better track nonfilers who may then “face double the amount of tax due and stiff penalties,” according to Revenue Commissioner Michael J. Heffernan.
All tax types administered by the DOR are eligible for the amnesty, with the exception of the preferred provider excise, the deeds excise, abandoned bottle deposits, and other taxes where DOR does not have the sole authority to waive penalties, such as taxes covered under the International Fuels Tax Agreement.
