Harrington earns ninth consecutive ‘A’ grade for patient safety

Harrington HealthCare System has received its ninth consecutive A grade from the Leapfrog Group for patient and hospital safety.

This latest rating from the independent hospital watchdog nonprofit Leapfrog Group makes Harrington just one of 98 health organizations in the country to receive the grade A rating for nine consecutive years, according to the Southbridge-based health care network. The rating is determined from more than two dozen safety measures, including how well hospitals protect patients from accidents, errors, injuries, and infections. The measures are then combined to produce a single letter grade.

Harrington is one of only 98 hospitals nationwide and only one of 13 in Massachusetts to achieve nine consecutive A’s since the scoring began in 2012.

Of the 11 regional hospitals included in the rankings, seven received an “A” score, two got a “B” and two got a “C.” Leapfrog ratings are issued biannually, in the spring and the fall.

The hospitals that received an “A” were Milford Regional Medical Center in Milford, UMass Memorial – Marlborough Hospital in Marlborough, Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester, Harrington, Heywood Hospital in Gardner, Emerson Hospital in Concord and UMass Memorial – HealthAlliance Hospital in Leominster. MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham and Natick received a “B.” UMass Memorial Medical Center – University Campus and UMass Memorial Memorial Medical Center – Memorial Campus, both in Worcester, received “C” grades.
