Mass employers added more than 48K in first half of 2016
Massachusetts employers have added more than 48,000 jobs this year, tempering to some extent the concerns over global economic headwinds and sluggish growth in state tax revenues.
State officials on Thursday reported employment data for June, with the jobless rate holding at 4.2 percent for the third straight month. Employers added 16,400 jobs in June, but some of those jobs were due to the end of a labor dispute at Verizon.
From June 2015 to June 2016, Massachusetts added 67,300 jobs and the state's unemployment rate is down 0.7 percent over the past year.
In June, employers in the education and health services sector added 11,700 jobs and that sector has gained 23,700 over the past year. Government jobs were down in June but are up 1,800 over the year.
“The good news here is all private sectors show over-the-year job gains with the exception of manufacturing, and private sector job gains are up 2.2 percent over the year,” Labor and Workforce Development Secretary Ronald Walker II said in a statement.
