Seasonally unadjusted unemployment rates rose throughout the commonwealth last month, with very little year-over-year changes in 22 areas around Massachusetts that are measured by both the state and federal governments, according to data released today by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.
From December 2011 to last month, the unemployment rate in the Worcester area rose from 7 percent to 7.2 percent, with a net loss of slightly more than 2,000 jobs. The rate for the Framingham area, meanwhile, rose from 4.8 percent to 5.1 percent, despite the fact that the area picked up 1,000 jobs. However, the area's labor force increased by more than 1,400.
Meanwhile, the rate stayed the same – 8.8 percent – in the Leominster-Fitchburg-Gardner area, with a net gain of nearly 500 jobs.
The state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for December was 6.7 percent, slightly above the unadjusted rate of 6.6 percent. Over the year, the latter rate was unchanged, but up 0.5 percent from November.
