Kopin To Open Silicon Valley Tech Center
Kopin Corp., based in Westborough, announced the opening of a second California location.
The new Silicon Valley site will be the firm's first Wearable Tech Center, which the company said will help drive development and innovation in voice- and gesture-based technologies and hardware components and further enhancing collaboration with customers.
An existing building will be renovated to have state-of-the-art acoustic test chambers and measurement systems to provide a full range of acoustic and audio testing, Kopin said. It will focus on enhanced speech technology development and evaluation, low-power integrated circuit design, concept system design, and customer support activities.
The site will be staffed with workers who helped develop Kopin's Golden-i wearable headset concept systems, a new speech enhancement group, and integrated circuit designers from Santa Clara, Calif.-based e-MDT America Inc., in which Kopin acquired a majority stake this month.
Kopin employs about 170 full-time workers worldwide and said no jobs will be leaving Massachusetts for the Tech Center.
"The center is strategically located in the heart of Silicon Valley in order to solidify Kopin's position on the front line of the growing wearable computing market as we continue to invest in forming strategic relationships with top technology companies," said Kopin CEO John C.C. Fan. "The Wearable Tech Center will enable us to test and refine the integration of various technologies into the concept systems."
The center will be in Santa Clara, Calif. Kopin also has an office in Scotts Valley, Calif., about 25 miles south of Santa Clara, which it said will focus on developing government systems. Kopin's Westborough location— which became its headquarters when the firm sold part of its business along with its Taunton headquarters in January — will focus on developing and manufacturing displays and modules. Kopin also has offices in Hong Kong and Japan.
