Hiring in America rebounded last month with 248,000 jobs added in September, up from the adjusted growth of 180,000 jobs in August – and beating the 12-month average growth of 213,000 jobs per month, according to preliminary data from the government.
Most analysts had expected job creation to hover around the 12 month number, according to multiple reports.
Meanwhile, the unemployment rate dipped 0.2 percent to 5.9 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) said Friday morning. The decline marked the first time the number has been below 6 percent since 2008.
Professional and business services led job growth last month with 81,000 new jobs, according to the BLS.
A variety of industries saw growth. Additional growth was seen in retail (up 35,000), health care (up 23,000), food services and drinking places (up 20,000, construction (up 16,000), financial activities (up 12,000), and mining (up 9,000).
Employment in other major industries, including manufacturing, wholesale trade, transportation and warehousing, and government, showed little change in September, the BLS said.
