JetBlue Pilots Get iPads

JetBlue Airways said it has received approval from federal regulators to give custom-equipped iPads to all of its pilots to use in the cockpit.

The approval from the Federal Aviation Administration follows a several-month-long trial involving 60 pilots. Now, all 2,500 JetBlue pilots will get the tablets.

JetBlue said its pilots have been allowed to use laptops in the cockpit for more than 10 years, but said the iPads offer new capabilities, such as real-time weather reports, aircraft performance reports and the ability to update flight documents. Pilots are receiving the tablets as the airline implements free high-speed wireless Internet called Ka-Band on its planes.

The company is also evaluating digital charting applications for later implementation.

"We are one step closer to a paperless cockpit," said Jeff Martin, senior vice president of operations.

JetBlue will start offering flights to Florida out of Worcester Regional Airport in November.
