Marlborough medical technology company Hologic’s Genius Digital Diagnostics System is now approved by European regulators, having received its CE mark, the company announced on Tuesday.
The system is the first digital cytology platform to combine a new artificial intelligence algorithm with digital imaging to help cytotechnologists and pathologists identify pre-cancerous lesions during cervical cancer screenings.
The system can rapidly analyze all cells on a ThinPrep Pap test slide, narrowing tens of thousands of cells down to a gallery view of the most diagnostically relevant images in looking for potential cancer, according to Hologic. This is slated to help healthcare providers guide early detection and treatment decisions for their patients.
“Our teams developed a breakthrough imaging technology that converts physical glass cytology slides into digital images with superior clarity,” said Kevin Thornal, Hologic’s president of diagnostic solutions. “From this digitalization, advanced image analysis and improved standardization are now achievable.”
