Harrington Clears Hurdle To Cancer Center

Harrington Memorial Hospital has received local planning and zoning commission approval to build a 18,000-square-foot, $8 million cancer center on its Southbridge campus.

The hospital expects to have all of its regulatory approvals and permits in order in time to begin construction in June. The project is a joint venture between Harrington and Radiation Therapy Services Inc., a developer of radiation therapy centers.

Hospital executives say the center would provide cancer patients in Central Massachusetts and Northeastern Connecticut with radiation and medical oncology services until now only available in the region's major cities.

The Dana-Farber/Brigham & Women's Cancer Center at Milford Regional Medical Center opened in January.
