Crusaders Honor Mustard Seed Founder

The College of the Holy Cross will recognize four alumni, including Worcester resident Frank Kartheiser, Class of 1988, for their outstanding professional achievements and service at a ceremony next week.

Kartheiser dropped out of Holy Cross in 1971 to start the Mustard Seed in Worcester, a storefront agency that helped the elderly, poor and homeless before growing to become a soup kitchen and homeless shelter.

In 1987 he returned to Holy Cross and finished his degree in religious studies in 1988. In 1992 he became the director and organizer of Worcester Interfaith, an alliance of Worcester religious congregations and organizations that work with the underprivileged. Kartheiser also helped create many community organizations in Worcester, and is a founding member of the Holy Cross Community Leadership Workshop, a new student training program for those interested in nonprofit sector careers.

The college also gave the Sanctae Crucis Award to Kristen M. O’Hara , Class of 1992; Richard J. O’Reilly, Class of 1964; and Retired U.S. Marine Corps  Lt. Gen. Bernard E. Trainor, Class of 1951, of Potomac Falls, Va.
