Framingham clean energy company Ameresco has signed a 20-year, eight-site contract with Colorado electric utility United Power to install a large battery system designed to improve the power grid.

The contract with the Colorado company will add renewable energy sources to the north central region of the state and expand grid resilience, according to a Monday press release from Ameresco. The company will place battery assets in three counties, with four 11.75-megawatt hour and four 7.84-megawatt hour batteries distributed across the area.

This is the newest in a series of contacts Ameresco has entered across a broad geographic region from California to Ontario.

The new batteries from Ameresco will alleviate some of the burden on the power grid during high-consumption periods.

"The use of batteries on our distribution network is essential to a resilient and responsive power system, and we are excited to be moving ahead with one of the most aggressive plans for such a system," Mark Gabriel, president and CEO of United Power, said in the release. "These battery arrays will allow us to balance our power needs throughout the day and incorporate local renewables more efficiently."

Amereco estimates the batteries will be in use by 2024.
