Yvonne Spicer, who was mayor of Framigham from 2018 to 2022, has been appointed as executive director of Life Science Cares Boston.
Spicer will lead the Cambridge-based nonprofit in its goal of leveraging the thriving life sciences community to disrupt the cycle of poverty in the Greater Boston area.
Spicer became Framingham’s first mayor when the then-town became an official city and is the first African-American woman to be popularly elected as mayor of a city in Massachusetts.
In this new role, Spicer will oversee all strategic and operational planning at LSC Boston, including driving revenue, community engagement, and organizational development, according to a Wednesday press release from the nonprofit.
“I have seen what is possible when the business community steps up to support nonprofit organizations and the work they do to help people in need. The potential of the Life Science Cares’ model of collective impact is enormous, and I am thrilled to bring my diverse leadership experience to build on this work and continue to make a positive impact on the communities in need,” Spicer said in the press release.
LSC Boston was previously led by Sarah MacDonald, who has transitioned into a role to oversee the organization’s affiliates in Boston, Philadelphia, New York, San Diego and the San Francisco Bay Area as president, according to the press release. LSC was founded in 2016.
Spicer holds bachelor's and master’s degrees from State University of New York-Oswego and a doctorate in educational leadership from UMass Boston.
