Worcester Historical Museum is marking its 150th anniversary with a name change, free admission, and the reinstallation of a $1.3-million gallery.

The city staple will now be known as Museum of Worcester to better communicate the organization’s continued mission to be a central hub for sharing and curating all things Worcester, according to a Thursday press release from Museum of Worcester.

“We have gone way beyond just collecting old things and have firmly established a museum that celebrates our community. We are the only local organization solely dedicated to collecting, preserving, and interpreting Worcester’s history in all time periods and subject areas for all audiences, offering exhibitions and programming for all residents to know, enjoy, and share their heritage,” William Wallace, the museum’s executive director, said in the release.

Along with the museum’s rebrand, patrons will now be able to access the reinstalled Fuller Gallery of Industrial History, featuring $1.3 million in renovations and a redesigned lobby and gift shop.

Museum-goers have been granted free regular admission for one year, courtesy of a donation from C Jean & Myles McDonough Charitable Foundation. Tickets usually sell for $5 for adults and $4 for seniors and students, according to the museum’s website.

The foundation had previously gifted the museum $1.5 million in 2015. Myles died in 2015 and Jean passed in 2021

Museum of Worcester has two exhibits on display including Strikes, Spares And Deadwood: Candlepin Bowling, available through March 29, and In Their Shirtsleeves, a photography collection of Worcester innovators, workers, and investors.

With 23,000 visits in 2023 and 18 local employees, Museum of Worcester is the 24th most popular tourist attraction in Central Massachusetts when ranked by 2023 attendance, according to data collected by WBJ's Research Department.
