Firms Plan Bigger Bonuses

A full 64 percent of companies surveyed by Challenger, Gray & Christmas said they plan to give holiday cash bonuses this year.

That's 10 percent more than last year, and Challenger said that while most companies are not ready to begin hiring again, "they are cognizant of the potential to lose high performing workers when the job market begins to improve."

Not only are more companies planning to give bonuses this year, but some are planning on giving even bigger checks, Challenger said. Eight percent of survey respondents said the bonuses they pay this year will be bigger than last year's.

Last year, none of the companies surveyed said they were increasing the size of holiday bonuses.

Sixteen percent of respondents said they awarded bonuses last year, but would not this year. Four percent said they planned to give smaller bonuses this year.
