Federal Funding For Fitchburg Firm's Military Tech

With $2.5 million in government funding, Fitchburg-based Headwall Photonics will develop sensors that can detect chemicals from the air and ground.

The company said it will develop and manufacture a new class of miniature chemical imaging sensors for the military to use in unmanned aerial vehicles and unmanned ground vehicles.

The technology will help the military monitor regions, patrol borders, assess chemical and biological threats and assist in search and rescue missions.

Headwall's sensors capture all chemical information within their field of view. The funding for the project was part of the Department of Defense Appropriations Act passed in late July.
