Hopkinton-based EMC Corp. plans to vacate a majority of the space it leases on Computer Drive in Westborough this year, according to a company spokesman.
As part of a company-wide restructuring program that was announced last year, EMC plans to move employees from the 4400 Computer Drive site in Westborough to existing EMC-owned facilities in Hopkinton and Franklin in 2010. Some EMC employees will remain in Westborough until 2013, but eventually those employees too will move to EMC-owned facilities in Massachusetts and North Carolina. The company did not say how many employees work in Westborough, but the company has about 8,800 employees in all of Massachusetts.
Part of the overall goal of the restructuring is to consolidate real estate holdings around the world. The moves are part of a "disciplined approach to reduce costs; foster greater collaboration; and strengthen our operations in the most efficient and effective manner possible without compromising our ability to work productively and serve our customers," EMC spokesman Patrick Cooley wrote in an e-mail statement.
