Massachusetts workforce investment boards will get $3.2 million in federal stimulus funds to train workers for jobs in health care, Gov. Deval Patrick announced today.
The Central Mass. Regional Employment Board in Worcester is receiving $210,000, and the Metro South/West Regional Employment Board in Marlborough and the North Central Workforce Investment Board in Leominster will each get $200,000. The regional boards will develop programs to help both unemployed and employed workers get degrees and certifications for jobs as nurses, lab assistants, medical technicians and other in-demand positions.
One in every seven jobs in the state is in the health care and social assistance sector, and health care jobs are growing despite the recession.
The grant program is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and administered by Commonwealth Corp. through the Workforce Competitiveness Trust Fund.
