EMC Still Biggest External Storage Seller

EMC Corp. of Hopkinton remained by far the largest player in external disk storage systems in the first quarter of the year, despite a drop in revenue from that market, according to a new report from Framingham analyst IDC.

Overall, revenues from external disk storage systems fell 13.6 percent from the first quarter of 2008, and EMC’s revenues from the systems dropped 16 percent, from $1 billion to $871,000. That left the company with 20.7 percent of the market, compared with 21.3 percent last year.

Meanwhile, HP retained its lead in the market for all disk storage systems, with 17.4 percent of total revenues, while EMC came in second at 15.5 percent. Overall, revenues from the systems fell 25.8 percent.
