Consumer Confidence Continues Rise

The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index rose 5.6 points to 57.9, the highest reading in about a year and a half.

The index jumped in March and continued its upward trend in April. More consumers said economic conditions were "good" while about 2 percent fewer said economic conditions were "bad." The number of consumers expecting business to improve in the next six months rose from 18 percent last month to 19.8 percent in April.

The measure is based on a representative survey of 5,000 United States households.
