Commuter rail ending at Littleton/495 station for work

Many commuter rail trains on the Fitchburg line will start and stop in Littleton starting Monday for track work.
Some commuter rail trains on the Fitchburg line will end at the Littleton/495 station starting Oct. 15 to allow crews to replace 30,000 railroad ties along the track.
Inbound trains 412, 414, 416, 418, 420, 422 to Boston will originate at the Littleton/495 stop, with no trains running between there and the final stop at Wachusett. Outbound trains 403, 405, 407, 409, 411 and 413 will terminate at Littleton/495, with bus service to the remaining stops to Wachusett.
The work is slated to start Monday and continue through November, according to Keolis Commuter Services, which operates the MBTA's commuter rail system.
Off-peak trains may experience minor delays during the project, Keolis said.
The tie-replacement project, which includes replacing wooden supports and the crushed stone underneath, is necessary track maintenance to help ensure a smooth and comfortable ride for passengers, and to further improve service reliability, Keolis said. The operator said it's replaced more than 200,000 ties across the commuter rail system since it began its operating contract in 2014.
