Providing service for customers without getting too close — a growing necessity for restaurants, retailers and others — is now going to be tried by banks.
Hudson-based Avidia Bank, Marlborough's Main Street Bank, Webster-based Webster Five Cents Savings Bank and Worcester's Cornerstone Bank and Webster First Federal Credit Union were among the first to take such an action, closing all bank lobbies starting Tuesday to limit interactions and the spread of coronavirus.
Starting Wednesday, Leominster-based Fidelity Bank, Whitinsville's UniBank, Southbridge-based Savers Bank, Fitchburg-based Workers Credit Union, Marlborough's St. Mary’s Credit Union and Oxford-based bankHometown will begin serving customers only through drive-up windows. Middlesex Savings Bank of Natick will close most in-person banking starting Wednesday, closing entirely the branches without drive-throughs, and Rockland Trust will only keep open some of its branches.
In some cases, banks are still allowing lobby access for customers who make an appointment.
Others so far remain open, including Digital Federal Credit Union of Marlborough, Clinton Savings Bank, Leominster Credit Union, Shrewsbury's Central One Federal Credit Union and MutualOne Bank of Framingham. The largest bank chains with Central Massachusetts locations have also yet to take such a step, including Bank of America, Santander Bank and TD Bank.
