Anyone who works in recruiting knows that the Internet has made it exponentially easier to find applicants for any given position. But, according to a new article from the human resources research organization Staffing.org, in some ways it's made it too easy.
The group says HR staff have trouble keeping up with the number of applications they receive, especially since online application processes make it so easy for unqualified applicants to blanket companies with resumes.
According to Staffing.org, the number of jobs posted online has gone from 1.2 million in 1996 to 100 million or more today. The group puts the number of employment websites available in 2008 at 50,102 and says that is projected to rise to 105,000 by 2012.
To handle the increase in clutter, Staffing.org says there are a number of best practices that companies have developed. Yield analysis can find the advertising methods that result in the highest percentage of qualified applicants for the money.
Quality control methods let employers filter candidate leads more efficiently, and improved transparency and communication can help guide good applicants through the process efficiently.
The organization says companies will also get better results by providing plenty of public information about their openings, benefits and corporate culture and by branding themselves to attract the highest quality candidates.
