AG, Comcast Reach Agreement Over Misleading Ads

The office of Attorney General Martha Coakley has reached an agreement with Comcast over allegations that a company promotional campaign misled customers.

Coakley had accused the cable company of inaccurately explaining how television viewers could prepare for the U.S. government's transition to digital television in February 2009. Its "Get Ready" mailings and web site postings failed to disclose other options available to customers who use antennae with analog televisions, failed to make disclosures in a font of at least 8-point size, made claims that non-cable customers would not need new equipment when they might require new cable outlets or wiring and presented misleading price comparisons by failing to disclose the full costs of cable service.

Comcast spokesman Marc Goodman said the company has voluntarily worked to educate Masschusetts residents about the transition, spending more than $5 million on public service announcements and organizing 60 town meetings and forums across the state. He said the company was happy to make the changes to its materials requested by the attorney general's office.

Under the agreement, Comcast will modify its web site and future mailings and will destroy all copies of existing "Get Ready" mailings intended for distribution in the state.
