Worcester County reported 972 new confirmed and probable coronavirus cases and 70 fatalities in July, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.Â
The new cases in Worcester County increased in July to 13,322 since the pandemic began. Statewide, cases increased by 8,730 in the month of July, increasing the total to 117,620.Â
July’s totals paled in comparison to April and May, when Worcester County peaked. Just over three-fourths of the county’s total cases took place in April and May. Now cases — though still relatively low — are up on upswing again. Worcester County’s seven-day average for new cases doubled from mid-July to this week.


Between July 31 and Aug. 6, Worcester County coronavirus cases increased by 262, bringing the total to 13,525. Across the state, confirmed and probable cases increased by 2,776, with 119,882 overall. More specifically, there were 2,133 confirmed and 643 probable new cases.
Fatalities in the county increased by 10 in the past week, with two consecutive days of no deaths on Aug. 4 and Aug. 5. The Worcester County death toll is now nearing 1,000, standing at 998 through Thursday.
Throughout Massachusetts, there were 95 confirmed coronavirus deaths reported this week contributing to the 8,470 total. On Aug. 6, there were 32 new fatalities, which is a large increase compared to the two deaths on Aug. 5.

DPH reported 11,555 new coronavirus tests administered between July 31 and Aug. 6.
The City of Worcester reported 75 new coronavirus cases this week with 5,577 total. The city’s weekly briefing was moved to Wednesday from Thursday, making week-to-week comparisons more difficult, but the 97 new cases in the most recently reported seven days is the highest since the week ending June 11.


UMass Memorial Health Care and Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester reported a total of 20 active cases and five in intensive care. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the two hospitals have had 351 deaths, and a total of 387 employees have tested positive for the virus.
MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham and Natick reported eight inpatients with one in the ICU, and Milford Regional Medical Center reports eight inpatients, one of which is in intensive care. Harrington Hospital in Southbridge and UMass Memorial HealthAlliance in Leominster reported seven total inpatients and three in the ICU.
Nationally, there are now more than 4.8 million cases and 160,111 fatalities, according to Johns Hopkins University in Maryland. Globally, 19.1 million cases have been recorded with roughly 715,555 deaths.
