Six physicians from Worcester-based Reliant Medical Group were recognized recently. Dr. Joel Popkin was recognized as the 2012 Laureate Award winner by the Massachusetts Chapter of the American College of Physicians. Dr. John Trudel was named one of the Top 25 Clinical Informaticists in 2012 by ModernHealthcare.com. Dr. Robert Harizi was named a Distinguished Alumnus of the Worcester Public Schools by the Worcester Educational Development Foundation. Dr. Renu Goyal was awarded the Community Educator Award for 2011-2012 by University of Massachusetts Medical School. Dr. Joseph Hannan received the Integrity Award from Vanguard Health Systems; and Dr. Robert Yood has been awarded the 2012 Worcester District Medical Society Career Achievement Award.
A game developed by UMass Medical School, the Massachusetts Digital Games Institute and Becker College — all of Worcester — was voted Best in Show at the Serious Games and Virtual Environments Showcase at the 2013 SSIH International Meeting for Simulation in Healthcare in Orlando, Fla. The training, communication and assessment game, On Call, simulates an emergency department and is designed to be played by medical and nursing students.
The Worcester Firefighters Memorial 6K Committee's first NEADS-sponsored puppy has been matched with a client. Blaze, named in honor the six firefighters who lost their lives in the Worcester Cold Storage fire in December 1999, is a service dog for the classroom with NEADS client Angela Mullally, a school psychologist at School 19 in the Rochester City School District in New York.
Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, with members in Central Massachusetts, is one of 14 Massachusetts companies named one of America's Top Workplaces by WorkplaceDynamics. Harvard Pilgrim was ranked No. 105 nationwide among 872 organizations with more than 1,000 employees that participated in regional top workplace programs.
The Discovery Museums of Acton is celebrating its highest number of visitors ever — nearly 180,000 in 2012 — in its 30-year history. The number includes those served in classrooms throughout the region. The museums have seen a 42-percent growth rate in the number of people served since 2009.
The $400-million Albert Sherman Center at the University of Massachusetts Medical School has achieved LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The Sherman Center will expand and unify UMass Medical School's Worcester campus and double its research capacity.
