2011 40 Under Forty: Shawn Straub

DIRECTOR OF HUMAN RESOURCES, Fallon Clinic

Company location: Worcester

Residence: Marlborough

Favorite movie: "How to Suceed in Business Without Really Trying"

Age: 36

Career highlights: My career path has taken several distinct turns over the years. While I began my career with the hopes of becoming a social psychologist, I was quickly drawn to human resources. Luckily, the company I was working for at the time had a mentoring program and I was paired with the director of employee relations. She was very supportive and helped me find my way in HR. When a secretarial position became available in the HR department, I took it. I was promoted to an HR generalist, then to the manager of employee relations, and then to my current company as an employee relations specialist. About four years ago, after time as both a manager and then a director, I was promoted to the director of human resources.

Community involvement: While I often support the United Way volunteer efforts, my true passion is helping others find gainful employment and a true career path opportunity where they can grow. I often speak at workshops and community outreach programs to help job coaches or potential candidates with résumé writing and professionalism skills.

Biggest success: My biggest professional success was creating and sustaining a professional mentoring program at Fallon Clinic. I worked hard to develop and implement a program that would be meaningful for our employees and give back so much of what I had received in my experience as a mentee. Over the past four years we have enrolled more than 200 mentors and mentees in this program.

Biggest challenge: I would have to say that my biggest professional challenge to date has been building a successful work-life balance. Since the birth of my daughter four years ago I continually strive to be a good role model for my daughter and show her that not only can you be a successful business woman, but also a successful parent.

Hidden talent: I have a few hidden talents, but my favorite talent is that I am a home cheese maker. I enjoy crafting my own cheeses, aging them, and most importantly, sharing them with friends and family.
