2011 40 Under Forty: Mickey Wells

MORTGAGE CONSULTANT, Ross Mortgage

Company location: Westborough

Residence: Worcester

Favorite movie: "White Men Can't Jump"

Age: 29

Career highlights: I spent five years in outside sales roles in the insurance industry. I was then recruited to join the mortgage lending industry and I jumped at the opportunity. Within 12 months my team grew our lending volume by 50 percent over our record year in our 46-year history. I recently joined Ross Mortgage in Westborough.

Community involvement: I am an active member of the Corridor Nine, Worcester and Blackstone Valley Chambers of Commerce, as well as Hype 9 and the Worcester Regional Association of Realtors.

I feel that it is very important to get to know the members in your community and to do business with local business owners. I also just ran the Worcester half-marathon to raise money for the Worcester Animal Rescue League.

Biggest success: I’m lucky to have a career that I truly enjoy. I find success with each and every customer I help get into their dream home. What I enjoy the most is mentoring first-time home buyers.

By explaining the home-buying process and sticking with them through each of the various stages of the application, I ensure I put them into a loan they can understand and that they can afford. Home ownership can be a lifelong dream to some. Nothing beats the feeling of helping make someone’s dreams come true.

Biggest challenge: My biggest challenge is when I have to say no. I wish I could put every applicant into a home; however, that is not always the case. For those who are turned down, I like to explain the reasons why they did not qualify and give suggestions on how they can take pro-active steps to make positive changes to their personal financial situation which can help lead to a loan approval in the future.

Mentors: I can’t pick just one — all of my family members have inspired me in so many different ways. My father encourages me to set goals, never give up and find a solution to any problem.

My mother has shown me selflessness and laughter. My brother evokes my competitive spirit. My sister’s success is so inspirational. My wife makes me want to be a better (and cleaner) person each and every day.

Hidden talent: It isn’t so much of a talent as it is a hobby. After completing my first half- marathon, I decided to step it up a notch and last month ran the Warrior Dash in Amesbury. It was a grueling obstacle course through the woods in 12-24 inches of mud for 3.1 miles. I was happy to cross the finish line and put that one behind me.
