2011 40 Under Forty: Joshua A. Paul

SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT, Bartholomew & Co. Inc.

Company location: Worcester

Residence: Groton

Favorite movie: "The Matrix"

Age: 38

Career highlights: I joined Bartholomew in 1995, less than a year after the company was founded. I passed my certified financial planner exam in 2008 and earned the accredited investment fiduciary professional designation in 2010. I was promoted to senior vice president in 2011. The company is still the same great place to work today as it was when I started. Tom Bartholomew has built a great company with a culture that provides all of us the room to grow, strive and achieve.

Community involvement: I coach soccer in my hometown and have participated in a number of charity events in the Worcester area. Additionally, I have contributed my time to the Greater Worcester Community Foundation.

Biggest success: While there have been a number of events that I am proud to be a part of from a professional standpoint, I am most enthusiastic about my business and client success through the recent financial crisis. I am proud of the path I followed and the confidence I was able to impart upon my clients and their portfolios to weather the storm.

Biggest challenge: My biggest challenge has always been balancing my personal life and my professional career. I have a wonderful family and a rewarding career. I just feel that some weeks my career gets more time than my family and I continually strive for more balance.

Mentor: I had Father John W. Howard for the freshman class Western Cultural Tradition at Boston College. The class was intended to “introduce students to the philosophical and religious heritage of the West through a study of the major thinkers who have formed Western cultural traditions.” Father Howard did this and more. While he was not exactly a mentor, he was not just a teacher either. He created an environment where open dialogue was as important as inward reflection. His thorough and introspective method of analysis altered the way I look at nearly every situation I encounter today.

Hidden talents: My wife says I have a little too much MacGyver in me. That, and I have a natural affinity for remembering random, almost completely useless facts.
