DIRECTOR, CAREER PLANNING CENTER, College of the Holy Cross
Company location: Worcester
Residence: Framingham
Favorite color: Any shade of blue
Age: 38
Career highlights: My career began as a student at Ohio Wesleyan University, where I worked in the career center. I then attended the University of South Carolina where I received my master’s in education and worked for a small liberal arts college. I came to Holy Cross to run the college’s recruiting program. After two-and-a-half years, I was named the founding director of the college’s summer internship program. In July 2010, I became the director of the career planning center.
Community involvement: My involvement revolves around my children’s schools. I have served on the PTO of BLOCKS Preschool in Framingham for two years, and now serve as treasurer.
Biggest success: I am most proud of the growth and success of Holy Cross’ summer internship program. Seeing an initiative grow from a one-summer pilot program with 13 interns at 11 sites to one of Holy Cross’ marquee programs, with 149 students completing substantive internship experiences at 104 sites, brings me a great sense of accomplishment and pride.
Biggest challenge: Capturing the attention of 18- to 22-year-old undergraduate students is a herculean task. Holy Cross students are so focused on their academics, their engagement with the community and their co-curricular involvement that many put their own career development on the back burner. Capturing their attention and their time is always a challenge.
Mentors: Two of my early mentors taught me to be forward-thinking and strategic in addition to knowing when to keep my mouth shut. My most powerful mentors today are colleagues at Holy Cross from a variety of departments and divisions. On a daily basis, they challenge me to look at how I do this work in the context that is Holy Cross and then imagine how to do it even better.
Hidden talents: I can heal a skinned knee, a bumped head or hurt feelings with a single kiss.
