PROGRAM DEVELOPER, Alternatives Unlimited Inc.
Company location: Whitinsville
Residence: Woonsocket, R.I.
Favorite movie: "The Notebook"
Age: 35
Career highlights: I joined Alternatives more than 10 years ago, first as a counselor in a residential program for adults with mental illness. A year later, I was promoted to program coordinator — a position I held for four years. Six years ago, I was promoted to a position overseeing multiple programs for individuals with developmental disabilities and supervising a staff of 50. What all of my positions at Alternatives have had in common is an emphasis on making sure that the people we serve have a real chance at a fulfilling life.
Community involvement: I am a volunteer for a nonprofit disaster response organization in Rhode Island. Last year, I assisted in cleaning up the community after flooding occurred in southern Rhode Island. I have also recruited my 10-year-old son as a volunteer in community cleanups to teach him about the importance of helping others in need. I am also an active volunteer for my church.
Biggest success: My biggest professional success was creating a residential program for Alternatives to serve young adults. The program was successful and earned a reputation for its high-quality services. Young adults living in this program learned the skills they needed to move into their own apartments, return to school, and/or find a job.
Biggest challenge: As is the case with many people working for nonprofits, I think my biggest professional challenge is making sure that we are able to use limited resources in creative ways to make the most impact.
Mentor: My grandmother was a mentor to me because she always treated people with respect and love. She hugged everyone — it did not matter who you were or what you did, if you were there she hugged you. She taught me that life is precious and everyone is valuable.
Hidden talents: I am a good listener. Also, I sang soprano in choirs in high school and at my church.
