2011 40 Under Forty: Sean Mahoney

PRESIDENT & CEO, AndPlus Design LLC

Company location: Worcester

Residence: Worcester

Favorite color: Hometown Tampa Bay pewter and red. Go Bucs!

Age: 28

Career highlights: I began as a software engineer for a company in Framingham, but after building a background in software, I moved to a position at Boston University Center for Digital Imaging Arts as director of the web development program. Concurrently, I obtained a master’s degree in information technology at WPI, and built AndPlus to the size it is today.

Community involvement: I’ve served as a youth football coach in Shrewsbury, my company is active in the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce and a perennial sponsor of our local Girls Inc. chapter. I also run an annual golf charity event in honor of my father, who passed away from esophageal cancer in 2009. The tournament benefits the New England AMC Chapter of the AMC Cancer Research Center and has yielded more than $15,000 in donations in the short time it’s been running.

Biggest success: Learning from our mistakes! We learn more with each new project and grow with our clients to get better and raise the bar each time.

Biggest challenge: Time management and achieving a balance is the biggest challenge I face. Not only do we have to manage our own expectations for our business and employees, but we have to constantly reprioritize tasks in the best interests of our business and our clients, and it’s not uncommon for them to conflict. Sometimes the golf course has to wait.

Mentors: The three mentors that come to mind are my mother, father, and wife. My father was great at taking my accomplishments and delivering the ever-frustrating phrase, “That’s great, what’s next?”

My mother was a perfect role model, a whatever-it-takes individual who did more for us than we even saw. My wife, though not a traditional mentor, is my best friend and the one who believes in me through the good and the bad. I couldn’t have done anything without her.

Hidden talent: I was in an a cappella group in both high school and college.
