2011 40 Under Forty: John Lian

FINANCIAL PLANNER, Baystate Financial Services

Company location: Worcester

Residence: Worcester

Favorite color: Any color my daughter tells me to like.

Age: 37

Career highlights: I began working in the high-tech world after college, but quickly realized I needed to do something that had more of a positive impact on people’s lives. I began my career as a financial planner with a large insurance company, where I developed a passion for providing professional guidance on issues people truly need help understanding. In 2008, I moved my practice to Baystate Financial Services.

Community involvement: I am currently an advisory board member at Devereux Massachusetts, which serves children and young adults with psychological, behavioral and neurological disorders. I am an advisory board member at Bottom Line, which helps disadvantaged urban students get into and graduate from college. I am also involved with the CASA Project, which serves children who cannot live safely in their homes. I am also a member of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Worcester Economics Club and the local University of Alabama Alumni Association chapter.

Biggest success: My biggest professional success is the relationship I have with my clients, and educating them to the point where we can minimize both short- and long-term financial pressures to help them live a better life.

Biggest challenge: Managing the balance between business and my personal life has always been challenging for me. I am very driven and dedicated to my clients. They always get 100 percent from me during my working hours. I am also very committed to my wife and two young daughters. They always get 100 percent from me when I am home. Managing my calendar is critical, and has forced me to work much smarter, but it is always a challenge.

Mentors: My parents. I have learned so many life lessons about honesty, integrity, dedication and altruism from their example. I find myself doing and saying a lot of what my parents do or say that I said I would never do! This is a case of imitation being the highest form of flattery.

Hidden talents: I am an avid fisherman; I’ve also raised a tiger and a few other big cats.
