2010 40 Under Forty: Ike McBride

Senior Clubhouse Director, Boys & Girls Club of Worcester

Company location: Worcester

Residence: Worcester

Age: 38

Career highlights: I am first-generation urban renewal, which simply means I grew up in the projects when they were new. I attended Belmont Community for elementary school, Worcester East Middle, then North High. I went on to Indiana Tech and once I returned from Indiana, I began working as a bus monitor for Worcester Public Schools. I eventually became a summer camp counselor for Friendly House and then, in 1994, I started working for the Department of Youth Services. In 1997, Vince Delmonte took a chance on me and made me the director of the Great Brook Valley Boys & Girls Club. Today, I’m the senior clubhouse director of the Boys & Girls Club’s 5-year-old facility on Tainter Street.

Community involvement: I have been active in this community since I was old enough to understand what “giving back” meant. I have learned so much from Worcester that I want be a part of this city’s success and that success starts with our youth. I have worked very hard to see that our young people are not forgotten as we continue to grow this community, but most importantly they don’t forget about us!

Biggest success: My biggest success was being inducted into The Boys & Girls Clubs of Worcester Hall of Fame. My real success is in knowing that I had a hand in pushing some of the most talented kids in our area to realize how far they can go. In the past few years we have helped several members pursue higher education. Those members have also returned as volunteers and mentors.

Hidden talents: I think my most hidden talent is my ability to motivate through speaking and allowing others to look for ways to improve themselves from within themselves.
