2009 40 Under Forty: Willis Chandler

Willis Chandler

Age: 34

Title: Vice President of Business Development

Company: UMass Memorial Health care

Company location: Worcester

Residence: Westford

College: Brandeis University

Career highlights: I’m responsible for business development for the UMass Memorial Health Care system including the medical center in Worcester, four owned and eight affiliated community hospitals and multiple physician practices. My primary job is to strengthen and expand the network by working with clinical and hospital leaders to develop programs in the community that are connected to the medical center. I have previously overseen clinical operations in various areas such as the intensive care units.

Community involvement: I co-chair the United Way’s Supporting Positive Youth Development initiative. The opportunity to work with youths is particularly gratifying because so many are at pivotal stages in their lives where even modest additional supports can make an enormous impact on the rest of their lives.

Biggest professional success: Improving access to care for underserved populations and being a part of a team who improved that care in measurable ways. Being part of a team that helps people during life-changing moments is truly a privilege.

Dream job: Sports talk radio commentator. My primary responsibilities would be to watch sports and give my opinion. I already watch the games and have opinions; I just need to find a way to get paid for both.

Businessperson he most admires and why: John O’Brien. I have twice worked in hospital systems where he was the CEO and both times have witnessed his supervision of systematic quality of care and access to care improvements that directly benefited the public health of the communities. Additionally, he accomplished these significant professional achievements with the highest degree of personal integrity.

If you weren’t doing the job you’re doing now, what would you do? I would find another job within a health care system. I love the work and the people that are drawn to the field. Professionally, it is incredibly challenging and the product of our efforts is enormously gratifying.
