When I worry it is about the economy and how long it will take to recover. The public schools are our market and most of them are struggling financially which makes it difficult for them to purchase our publications.
We own the Printers Building on Portland Street so improvements to the downtown infrastructure in order to raise the value of downtown property would be very helpful. The Mayo Group has done an excellent job of developing our neighborhood and in conjunction with the city has improved Portland Street. Making sure that City Square is successful would do the same on an even larger scale.
Greatly increase funding to the public schools. Not only would this help our business it would help our country to become even richer both financially and culturally. The cities, states and countries that invest the most in education are the ones that become the most successful.
Publishing is satisfying because it is a business that sells ideas. In our case we publish high quality art education programs and sell digital fine art images to schools from kindergarten to college which means we are making a living doing good things for our culture. The people I get to work with are creative, work hard, and have fun. There is never dull day at Davis.
I think that next year could be even more challenging for us because it is going to take several years before the school market recovers. However, we are developing new educational programs that should grow the company significantly over the next three years.
