As a marketing and advertising agency, the worry for us would be that the constant bad economic news could scare businesses into inaction. It’s very easy if you’re looking at the short-term to trim marketing. But in the long-term, businesses that do tend to suffer.
Generally, I think towns could to a better job of creating a sense of cooperation between town management and the business community. Sturbridge, where we’re located, is undergoing a new process to create a master plan and invited both residents and business owners to participate. I think that spirit of cooperation is critical.
I think in general our state and federal leaders could do more to encourage small business development through smarter taxation policies and incentives. The reality is small businesses create a lot of new jobs and drive innovation. I think it’s the federal government’s job to basically let them do that better.
We’re fortunate enough to work with a broad range of clients. We have the opportunity to do something different every day. There’s always something fascinating going on. That makes days fly by.
Our outlook is quite positive. My feeling is that smart businesses will still continue to invest in marketing. One thing smaller companies like ours could benefit from is that this kind of economic situation makes people question their investments. Many may find that working with smaller, more nimble companies might be a better fit.
